What is Pro-Am—and why it works

Pro-Am (Professional–Amateur) competition means you dance with a Dance Professional as your partner. It is one of the most effective ways to improve because your training is guided, structured, and built around real performance outcomes.

Faster skill development
Consistent partnering, clear technical direction, and repeatable drills help you build strong habits quickly.
Confidence and clarity
A defined plan removes uncertainty—so you know what to work on, why it matters, and how it connects to competition.
A motivating goal framework
Competitions create focus and momentum. Many students find Pro-Am helps them stay consistent and inspired.
A complete experience
Beyond steps: musicality, presentation, floorcraft, stamina, and composure—skills that elevate your dancing and your enjoyment.

A competition experience that supports you

Pro-Am success is not only about dancing well—it’s about preparation, consistency, and confidence. We help you build a complete plan around your schedule and goals.

  • Event selection guidance: choose the right competition type and level for where you are now.
  • Competition pacing: build routines and stamina in a way that supports real performance—not just practice.
  • Floor readiness: learn what to do before, during, and after rounds to feel calm and prepared.
  • Polish and presence: details that change how you look and feel on the dance floor.

Note: Competition formats and logistics vary by event and season. Your Dance Professional will guide you based on your goals and availability.

Pro-Am FAQ

Do I need experience to start Pro-Am?
No. Many dancers start Pro-Am with zero competition experience. Your Dance Professional will recommend a level, a training frequency, and a timeline that makes sense for your goals and comfort level.
How quickly can I be ready for a competition?
Readiness depends on your goals, how many dances you want to enter, and how often you train. Some dancers prepare for a first event in a shorter cycle; others build longer foundations for confidence and consistency. We will map a timeline that sets you up for success.
What dances and styles can I train?
Pro-Am commonly includes Smooth, Rhythm, Standard, and Latin pathways. Your plan is customized—some dancers focus on one style, while others cross-train to build versatility.
Do I need a partner outside the studio?
No. In Pro-Am, your partner is your Dance Professional. This is a major advantage because you gain consistent partnering and professional guidance without relying on an outside partner’s schedule.
What happens at a competition?
You’ll dance in a series of heats (short rounds) on a competition floor with other couples, and may also participate in more extended events such as multi-dance challenges or scholarships depending on your level. Your Dance Professional will help you understand the structure that fits you best.
I’m nervous—can Pro-Am still be enjoyable?
Yes. Many students start Pro-Am specifically to build confidence. With the right plan, a supportive environment, and realistic goals, competitions become a positive, motivating experience.
